2020 Estate White, Oakville

Groth
Napa Green Certified

Second release  |  Just 600 cases produced

The introduction of the Groth Estate White, a blend of Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, was the realization of years of work and experimentation both in our winery and in our Estate vineyard in Oakville. As Groth’s first white wine to carry the Oakville appellation, the Estate White is sourced exclusively from our family’s Oakville Estate, in blocks once reserved for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. This vineyard, which we have farmed for 40 years, is our greatest resource, situated in the sweet spot of an AVA long recognized for producing some of Napa Valley’s finest Bordeaux-style wines, both red and white.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

The wine is a bright pale straw with a touch of celadon green. The dominant aroma is white peach with layers of lime, honeysuckle and persimmon adding to the complexity. Tasting this wine initially shows this is not just another Sauvignon Blanc. The wine has great viscosity and acid balance. Dominant flavors are lime, marmalade and then just a touch of tropical guava. It finishes clean and has a nice round, fresh mouthfeel.

Accolades

“Distinctive, starting with green, grassy overtones to the core of lemon-lime flavors, expanding effortlessly into notes of sea salt, toasted herbs, orange blossom and candied ginger peel. Offers a succulent frame, with a hint of lanolin.”

Vineyard

In 1994, the Groth family replanted the Eastern side of their Oakville Vineyard from Cabernet Sauvignon to Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, recognizing the potential of the clay soils there to produce white wines of great texture, depth and complexity. This bottling marks the first Groth white wine grown exclusively on the family’s Oakville Estate. The vineyard is sustainably farmed and became Napa Green/Fish Friendly Farming certified in 2014.

Pairing

While this versatile wine can pair well with a range of foods, grilled swordfish with mango-lime chutney would be a magical combination, as would fresh oysters. Halibut with wild rice is a favorite combination at a local Napa vintners “hangout” restaurant. In cooler seasons, it is also a delicious match for potato and leek soup: A Groth family favorite is the Potage Parmentier recipe from Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
